When knowledge about animals becomes interactive

At Aalborg Zoo, they’ve found a new way to engage children and families. With ActiveFloor as part of their educational approach, learning about animals, nature, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals has literally become a game.

Playful Learning at Aalborg Zoo

At Aalborg Zoo, learning isn’t presented as teaching – it’s presented as an experience you remember.
When children play on the ActiveFloor, they learn about the savannah, about the connections in nature, and about how our world fits together.
They move, they laugh – and they take new knowledge home with them.
This playful, active, and meaningful form of learning is at the very heart of Aalborg Zoo’s approach to education.
By combining play, movement, and technology, the zoo has created a digital nature experience that speaks directly to children – at their level.

“I would definitely recommend other attractions to use ActiveFloor,” says Søren from Aalborg Zoo.
“Especially those who work with communicating knowledge in a different way. It’s simply an amazing tool.”

Aalborg Zoo is a great example of how attractions – whether zoos, museums, or science centers – can use ActiveFloor to bring knowledge to life and make it truly engaging.
Because when learning becomes part of the experience, it creates something children will remember.

This is how learning becomes an experience

A few years ago, when they created an exhibition about the UN’s Global Goals, they faced a challenge:
How do you make a complex topic like sustainability and global responsibility interesting for children?

“We quickly realized that if we wanted to capture the children’s attention, we needed something interactive,” says Søren.
“Something they could move with – something that turned learning into play.”

The solution was ActiveFloor – an interactive floor where children move physically to solve tasks, answer questions, and explore knowledge.

A few years ago, when they created an exhibition about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, they faced a challenge:
How do you make a complex topic like sustainability and global responsibility interesting for children?

“We quickly realized that if we wanted to capture the children’s attention, we needed something interactive,” says Søren.
“Something that involved movement – something that turned learning into play.”

The solution was ActiveFloor – an interactive floor system where children move physically to solve tasks, answer questions, and explore knowledge.

From Global Goals to Wild Animals

Since the first exhibition, ActiveFloor has become a permanent part of Aalborg Zoo – both as an educational tool and as part of the visitor experience.
Today, the zoo uses its own custom-made game playlist, developed after getting to know the MyFloor platform.

“We have around ten games on our ActiveFloor,” says Søren. “The games cover everything from the African savannah and animal adaptations to animal-themed word puzzles, the Global Goals, and small challenges about wildflowers and insects.”
There are games for all ages – from quizzes about animal species to fun sorting activities where children place animals in the right categories.
In this way, each game becomes a small learning journey where children move, think, and collaborate.

When Technology Brings Nature to Life

For Aalborg Zoo, ActiveFloor has become a natural addition to more traditional forms of education such as signs and exhibitions.

“Of course, our classic educational tools still have their place,” says Søren. “But we need something that helps make it exciting. That’s exactly what ActiveFloor does.”

What sets ActiveFloor apart from other learning activities is its digital and interactive nature.
Children take part actively instead of just receiving information. They experience, think, and learn – creating a deeper understanding of what they see at the zoo.

“It makes perfect sense to combine physical activity with learning here at the zoo,” says Søren. “Because when children move, learning truly comes to life.”

From the Savannah to the Classroom

Aalborg Zoo’s ambitions don’t stop with visiting families. They also see great potential in using ActiveFloor as part of their educational programs for schools.

“We’re planning to use it in connection with our school service,” says Søren.
“There, we can tie it directly to the teacher’s presentation and create a more active learning experience for the students.”

For example, students can:
• Analyze animal adaptations and food chains on the savannah.
• Explore the importance of local biodiversity – from insects to wildflowers.
• Discuss nature conservation and sustainability based on the UN’s Global Goals.

It’s all about communicating knowledge in a way that is fun, sensory, and educational – and perfectly aligned with their pedagogical approach.

A Solution That Works – Every Day

In addition to being a creative and educational tool, Aalborg Zoo also highlights how reliable and user-friendly the system is.

“We’ve had ActiveFloor for several years now, and it just works every single morning,” says Søren.

The collaboration with ActiveFloor also gets high praise:
“The partnership has been fantastic. We received a thorough introduction, and the few times we’ve needed help, it’s been easy to get in touch with ActiveFloor – and the issues were solved right away.”

See Learning Come to Life

At Aalborg Zoo, learning and play come together as one experience.
When children play on the ActiveFloor, they explore the connections in nature, dive into knowledge about animals, and discover the joy of learning through movement.

For Aalborg Zoo, education is about creating connections – between people, animals, and nature.
ActiveFloor helps make those connections come alive, understandable, and fun.
