How do you get children interested in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, biodiversity, and animal adaptation?
That was the question Aalborg Zoo asked themselves when they wanted to create a more interactive and engaging experience for their visitors.

The answer came in the form of a solution that combines movement, play, and learning: ActiveFloor.

At Aalborg Zoo, education is a key part of the experience. It’s not just about looking at animals – it’s about understanding them.
That’s why the Zoo has, for several years, been dedicated to giving children and families knowledge to take home in a fun and engaging way.

A few years ago, when they created an exhibition about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, they faced a challenge:
How do you make a complex topic like sustainability and global responsibility interesting for children?

“We quickly realized that if we wanted to capture the children’s attention, we needed something interactive,” says Søren.
“Something that involved movement – something that turned learning into play.”

The solution was ActiveFloor – an interactive floor system where children move physically to solve tasks, answer questions, and explore knowledge.

Since the first exhibition, ActiveFloor has become a permanent part of Aalborg Zoo – both as an educational tool and as part of the visitor experience.
Today, Aalborg Zoo uses its own custom-made game playlist, which they developed themselves after getting to know MyFloor.

“We have around ten games on our ActiveFloor,” says Søren. “The games cover everything from Africa’s savannah and animal adaptation to animal-themed word puzzles, the Sustainable Development Goals, and small tasks about wildflowers and insects.”

There are games for both young and older children – from quizzes about animal species to fun sorting games where kids have to place animals in the right categories.
In this way, each game becomes a small learning journey, where children move, think, and collaborate.

When Learning Becomes Part of the Play

“We plan to use it in connection with our school service lessons,” says Søren.
“That way, we can link it directly to the teacher’s presentation and create a more active learning experience for the students.”

Here, students can learn about, for example:

how animals are adapted to their habitats on the African savannah,
why wildflowers and insects are important for the ecosystem,
or what the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals mean in practice.

It’s all about sharing knowledge in a way that is fun, sensory, and educational – and that perfectly supports Aalborg Zoo’s pedagogical approach.

For Aalborg Zoo, ActiveFloor has become a natural complement to more traditional forms of communication such as signs and exhibitions.

“Of course, our classic educational tools still have their place,” says Søren. “But we need something to make it exciting – and that’s what ActiveFloor does.”

What makes ActiveFloor stand out from other learning activities is its digital and interactive nature.
Children actively participate instead of just receiving information. They experience, think, and learn – and that creates a deeper understanding of what they see in the zoo.

“It makes perfect sense to combine physical activity with learning here at the Zoo,” Søren adds. “Because when children move, the learning truly comes to life.”

In addition to being a creative and educational tool, Aalborg Zoo also highlights how reliable and user-friendly the system is.

“We’ve had ActiveFloor for several years now, and it just works every single morning,” says Søren.
